“You obviously can’t play poker alone,” says Björn Lundsten, manager of Boss Media’s poker product, “but with a few friends, you get a group momentum going and can play all night. That’s essentially how the International Poker Network works. You get a few friendly opponents to come together in a comfortable setting, and the poker network they create becomes one great game that isn’t about to break up anytime soon.” The International Poker Network (IPN) has enjoyed a continuous growth rate since its conception in 2002 and is currently one of the largest poker networks on the Internet.

Several well-known gaming corporations direct their customers to the IPN,including Sportingbet, Poker Heaven and PAF. The IPN has also become attractive to corporations with prominent non-gaming brands such as Yahoo! UK. “We’re seeing an integration of the gaming and entertainment sectors,” says Lundsten. “Many companies with trusted names and brands are considering the addition of online gaming in some form. Online poker is not only a good source of revenue, but it is also an excellent way to satisfy customer demand for increased entertainment. The game of poker is a perfect blend of luck and skill, and it gives players an opportunity to socialise, make friends and fortify an online community.”

The International Poker Network is powered by Boss Media’s poker software, which offers customers games through a straightforward, user-friendly interface. Players can click right into the games from a related web site. “Usability was an important goal in the development of the latest version”, says Lundsten. “The application has been made more responsive to players as they navigate within the client. Appropriate information is readily available to players, and graphics are enhanced to create a much smoother experience.” New functions in the back-office interfaces used by IPN members and the poker management team at St Minver facilitate the retrieval of specific desired information and the arrangement of special tournaments.

“Tournaments are an important attraction of the IPN, so we continuously focus on improving tournament-related functions and features in the poker system,” says Lundsten. For example, the process of creating special tournaments for specific IPN members has been made easier. “The network administrator enters all information about the tournament into the system. The IPN member then logs in to the secure back-office interface to view that information and approve the tournament setup through the click of a button. It’s a simple as that.” Another new feature allows players to enter multi-table tournaments that have already commenced – at least until the first player has been eliminated from the tournament. “Allowing latecomers raises the convenience factor for players and is an effective way to increase the prize pot in guaranteed tournaments,” says Lundsten.

The innovative use of tournament credits in the system gives players more freedom of choice regarding the satellites and tournaments they can enter for free. Lundsten explains, “When a player wins a satellite, he automatically wins free entry into the upcoming tournament on the next level. However, the player can un-register for that tournament before it begins and save the entry fee in the form of tournament credits. These credits can be accumulated and used to cover the partial or complete entry fees to other satellites and tournaments of choice.” The award of tournament credits is also an effective way of rewarding player loyalty and encouraging increased play activity.

The IPN is able to offer regularly-scheduled tournaments as well as multi-table and single-table sit & go tournaments. “The IPN arranges plenty of tournaments. That’s fantastic, but we don’t want to force a busy player who is eager for tournament action to wait around for a scheduled tournament to begin. The idea behind sit & go tournaments is to allow players to take the initiative to arrange impromptu tournaments and spontaneously jump right into the tournament action whenever they know they have the free time to compete and a number of willing opponents,” explains Lundsten. A sit & go tournament begins as soon as the designated number of participants enters the tournament. “The greater the number of participants, the larger the prizes tournament players can compete for.”

Lundsten concludes, “We deal our clients a strong hand based on a reliable, adaptable software platform and fast, easy user access to a variety of great poker games. When the stakes are on the table, and the pot means a good share of the online poker market, the best thing about a hand from Boss Media is that you can change it to suit the circumstances. You can just ask for replacement cards whenever you like as you keep up with new technology and the latest poker trends. That’s the strategy: to give your players what they want and give your competitors a run for their money! And through the IPN, you can even cooperate with other operators so the game becomes profitable for all. That’s what I call a sure thing.”
